What is driver fatigue?

Fatigue plays a major factor in crashes in the UK, one study found that 1 in 6 crashes resulting in death or injury on major roads are fatigue related. It is reported that about 40% of professional drivers, especially HGV drivers report increased levels of sleepiness which can result in a disproportionately high number of fatigue related accidents.

Fatigue related accidents can occur when commercial drivers have a lack of stimulation. The most common roads where this is likely to happen are motorways and dual carriageways. Sleepiness reduces reaction time, alertness and concentration which severely affects the driver’s ability to process information quickly enough.

Some common warning signs of fatigue includes – increased difficulty concentrating, yawning and heavy eyelids. These are signs of micro sleep. This is when the driver nods o for between 2-30 seconds without realising.

Factors that contribute to driver tiredness are –

  • Lack of sleep/disturbed sleep
  • Time of day (2am-6am and 2pm-4pm)
  • Alcohol
  • Irregular sleep patterns
  • Driving for long periods of time
  • Medication that causes drowsiness

The Safety Shield Driver Fatigue can work at any time of the day as the face fatigue recognition isn’t affected by darkness or high light intensity, requires no contact for detection and is suitable for all types of vehicles as it is powered via a 12v plug in the vehicle.

The Safety Shield Driver Fatigue is very easily installed as it is a basic plug and play system which can be powered via the 12vplug in the vehicle. The actual position of the monitor can be placed anywhere in the cab providing that the camera can still see the face of the driver.

The Safety Shield Driver Fatigue is developed for commercial vehicle fleets. Additional to providing a warning alert in cab, the alert can also be outputted via a vibrating cushion/seatbelt. It can also be integrated with the ‘Safety Shield Fleet Management and MyAlert!’ software to output “fatigue” which will help driver managers to monitor the health and wellbeing of their drivers.
